The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly of My First 90 Days at eXp Realty
About 90 days ago I made a big switch. I brought my whole team, 16 people, a couple million dollars in commissions, and lots of listings, over to eXp Realty. Now that I’ve had a bit of time to reflect, I’m going to share the good, the bad, and the ugly from my first 90 days there.
Hi, I’m John Gluch at eXp realty and I run real estate teams in San Diego as well as a team of real estate agents in Phoenix. My team and I generated nearly 2 million dollars in commission revenue last year. As you can imagine moving that kind of operation to a new brokerage is no small decision so let me dive in and explain a bit about how I made the final call and what the first 90 days have looked like.
We’re going to start by diving into the four main reasons I switched.
- Community and Collaboration
- Revenue Share
- The Opportunity to Grow Much Faster
- The Ability to Grow my Influence More Quickly
After that, we’ll dig into the good, the bad, and the ugly. Let’s get started!
Community and Collaboration
Before I joined, and even more so after, I’ve felt like a part of a big and friendly community full of people who want to make my business—and their own, of course—better.
Revenue Share
If I win, those who’ve helped me also win. The revenue share is something eXp is famous for. It’s this idea that whoever sponsors you, or introduces you to the program, benefits when you sell a house. This also provides me with another potential revenue source in a space I really felt my team and I could crush.
Opportunity to Grow Much Faster
In joining, I would have a new network and new resources that can help me grow much faster than I would otherwise. One instance of this is that I’m based out of California but don’t have a license here, so I wasn’t selling houses. But because eXp is a national and international brand, I’m able to run teams in both places without having a license, which is amazing. It’s really helped me scale up in California.
I have the opportunity to grow my influence more quickly
My vision and mission are to humanize the real estate industry by providing a truly exceptional client experience that helps people find a home. This goes beyond just me and extends to the ethos of my whole team. We want people to feel like people, not just clients. In part because of eXp, I’ve been able to share what I know at various events and masterminds. It’s really wonderful to see people implement and benefit from the insights I’ve gained over my many years in this industry.
The Bad and the Ugly
I feel like I’m drowning in opportunity
Because eXp has so much to offer, there’s a lot to figure out. And it can all be a bit overwhelming at first. They’re not just a broker. They’ve got a bunch of live classes and mastermind groups. You get to learn from all these people who built these incredible systems. It also just creates more opportunities. There’s so much I can do. I could share eXp with an individual agent, or I could share it with this big brokerage, or I could go help my team sell another house, or I could start a marketing system that will generate a lot of leads for my team. There’s a bunch to do and a bunch of different ways to make money. It requires time and focus to figure it out, but it’s worth it. And, thankfully, the fine folks at eXp are incredibly friendly and willing to help.
Missing Events
Unfortunately, because of COVID, we’re not able to have all these wonderful events in person. We’re relegated to Zoom. Thankfully, eXp has made it clear that these will come back as soon as it’s safe to do so. These events are where the real magic is. It’s in getting together with amazing people to help grow each other’s businesses.
The Good
Community
Again, the community has been shockingly high-level and incredibly helpful. I’ve been so overwhelmed with how much time, energy, and the number of resources that these people have given me. I’ve been part of world-class coaching organizations and eXp is wonderful. It’s a full-blown collaboration and a full-grown partnership.
I’ve made ten times the money I put in on stock
This is not investment advice, but the little stock rewards here and there really add up. I’ve made ten times the amount I put in from my commissions. In some places, there’s a vesting period, but that’s just another reason to stick around. And it’s a nice reward for staying with them, unlike some brokerages that charge you a fee when you leave.
I’ve been able to help far more people than I expected
It’s been much easier to have people join my group at eXp than I expected it to be. There’s no cold calling. All I’m doing is inviting people to the awesome events that we get to be a part of and answering questions. It’s fun to help people change their lives. It feels kind of like showing someone a great movie. It’s a simple way to make someone’s life a little bit better.
I don’t have to do everything
There are so many great resources that eXp provides. I’m really able to use and plug in what I need, when I need it. I can just invite people to stuff. I don’t have to manage every event. Members of my team can hop on a great Monday mastermind, for example, and learn a bunch of stuff that the whole team can benefit from. It lets my agents learn and grow from people who are better at this than I am. And that makes everyone better and is such a great opportunity.
I’m having a lot of fun!
I haven’t had this much fun in a long time in my career. I just love new stuff, and it’s really fun to be a part of something I believe in.
To Wrap it All Up
It’s been fantastic. I couldn’t be happier, and I’d love to share more with you. If you’ve got questions about eXp, about why I joined, if you’re wondering how my team likes it, or any questions at all just fill out the form to schedule a consultation with me, or just shoot us a message on our contact page. We’re always happy to help.
